SSN Explanation

Why do I need to provide my Social Security Number?

The Internal Revenue Service requires that for any award given by the university it must report recipient’s name and Social Security number to the IRS. For a student who may receive a total of $600 or more during the entire calendar year, for any event or program, the student must report the earnings and possibly pay taxes on those earnings. If the university does not report the earnings from the fair, then we could be fined $150 for each student we fail to report and could come under review by the agency.

Please be ready to provide your Social Security Number after the award ceremony if you are selected for an award or scholarship. This information is required prior to the distributing of checks. You do not need to bring your social security card.
